Conversations about the Stollel...

Converstaions about the Stollel have started to peek up again as we near the one year anniversary of our underground movement.

The following three conversations were had/overheard by various members of the Stollel community:

(Guest post from Srulii)

I bumped into one of the guys from the main beis medrash here at YU. he asked me what I was going to be doing for break and I told him that I am gonna be in Teaneck.

He responded: "Bein Hasemestarim," implying that I should stay in YU and partake of the between semesters learning program.

I said: "I am doing Frollel."
"What's Frollel?"
"The kollel in Dr. Friedman's basement."
He was confused. "Who's Dr. Friedman?"
"The gevir of the Stollel."
"Okay I'm confused."
I then went to the restroom, where I was headed in the first place. I thought that the encounter was really funny.

~
Another conversation was overheard by a Stollel member while working on the fifth floor of the library. This is his version of the conversation. (Through a strange series of events, I later found out who this conversation was between and I can't assure that this is exactly as it happened.)
Girl: Do you know what this Strollel thing is?
Boy: What?
Girl: Yea, I was searching through these blogs and I found this Stollel, Strollel Tamid...
Boy: I think it's like a new type of chassid
Girl: Because they have like this whole plan to sleep one night in the library and I so want to do that too.

~

After a separate Stollel-related prank in the library (stay tuned for more info.) an onlooker of the aformentioned prank said in reference to the Stollel members who were involved:

"Wow. I so want to be Chabad right now."

To build a conscious community...

I was sick a few weeks ago, lying in bed for most of the day, and as I rested there, unable to think because of the throbbing in my head, I remember thinking that I wish someone would know I was sick so they could daven for me.

It was a one-day virus, a 24-hour bug if you will, and was certainly no cause for alarm but as I sat immobilized in bed I found myself reading Yehoshua Starrett's translation of Tzav V'Ziruz and came across the following passage...

"So the way to minimize and even dissolve this "I," this selfishness that separates you from G-d, is to seek out close friendships with like-minded spiritual seekers. Each one should be as concerned about the other's welfare as his own. Share each other's worries and joys, help and guide each other on the spiritual path..."
~ To Heal the Soul pg. 140

Now I wasn't looking for anyone to seriously worry about me but it got me thinking that the members of the Stollel and the greater community should at least be familiar with each others Yiddishe names in order that we may pray on each others behalf. Of course one can pray for another without knowing their specific name, but I thought that it might be something worthwhile to do...

And so I created a spreadsheet. Usually we make these spreadsheets after hearing of something seemingly bad, in order to split up Tehillim or to learn on someone's behalf, but I thought that there is no reason why we cannot pray for each others health and well-being without the initial negative impetus.

Anyone should feel free to enter there name. Some people may think it strange to give others your name, something usually reserved for the sick, but in this day and age I think we could all use the extra prayers...

Rabbis Machlis and Sarna on Parshas Vayeishev

This weeks teaching is highly endorsed by a certain Eliyahu Wittenberg...
Thank you to the people at MachlisPresents.org for continuing to share these videos.

~
Additionally, in a previous transmigration of my soul, I was schooled in a place called New York University. There, the rabbi on campus is a R' Yehuda Sarna (ayin. HERE for a related link to the last link). When he heard I was in the practice of making videos he approached me regarding an idea he had to put out a weekly video message on the parsha. It lasted a little more than two weeks before I left the Village to go back to Reishit. Here is one of the few video-messages we made.

Us and Them - Parshas Vayeishev

The Gemara (Sotah 10b) describes the noble acts that Tamar did in this weeks parsha in order that she not embarrass her father-in-law, Yehuda, in public.

אמר רבי יוחנן משום ר' שמעון בן יוחי נוח לו לאדם שיפיל עצמו לתוך כבשן האש ואל ילבין פני חבירו ברבים מנלן מתמר (בראשית לח) הכר נא

In the merit of her righteous act she was zocheh that Mashiach should come from her.

It seems, however, that the nations of the world have different values...
(NOTE: One expletive at 00:15, turn down the volume for 1 second)
~

On a separate note we need a final counting for Stollel. Please comment if you can come to either week. We have to make sure we have at least a minyan for Shacharis and Mincha. We already have about 7 full day commitments.

UPDATE: We Need Your Support...

Chevra, the Muss-Beis Thursday Night situation is not so strong. We need everyone's support. Thank you.

Explation: Okay, so let me explain this post. The Muss Thursday Night situation is fine. We don't need your support. We'd love if you joined but I don't really care. Me calling everyone 'chevra' should have been the giveaway. The main point of this post, as many mentioned in the comments, was the creature sitting on the ledge. I was hoping some would catch it and others wouldn't. It seems it was too obvious. Here is a video of the mystery creature.

Things to take note of...

Three things to take note of in this recent Yeshiva University Open House Brochure:

1) This is Rabbi Simon pre-beard. (Though it was not so long ago it still seems strange.)
2) I am in the background.
3) This picture was taken by a woman who clearly had no idea what was going on when she walked into the Muss Beis Midrash last year. I recall that at the time we thought that maybe this picture would make it into a Y.U. Brochure and thought it would be funny to make it look like Rabbi Simon was learning Breslov seforim (i.e. Likkutei Tefillos) at the time. Turns out the picture was used.

~

Additionally...

I have been thinking that for no reason at all I want to gather a team of people to spend the night in the Glueck Building/Library overnight. This operation will entail hiding from security people closing the building and only coming out after dark. There is no purpose to this mission.

Officially, the Glueck Beis Midrash closes at 2:30 A.M. (Why the Beis Midrash is ever "closed" is not for this discussion) and I think the Library closes even earlier. In the past, spending the night in the Library (I'm not saying I have or haven't) meant staying there until 9 AM the next morning, but now that they have connected the Beis Midrash with the Library, one can make their escape for the 7:45 AM minyan.

I am not worried about them finding this post because they will not know when we will strike.

Also, I am not sure what we will do when we come out after dark but I guess we will work on something.
I have not yet worked out the details, but is anyone with me?

Mazal Tov Stollel...

~

With thanks to the Almighty
the Stollel simchas continue...
AP HaLevi & Eliana Bracha

The Big Decision...

So here's how it is...
Queens is really far away and people might not be able to stop by.
It's not terrible, but it's also not as suburban as Teaneck.

Therefore, last week a number of people came to the decision that this year, the year of 5770, the Stollel would become
The
Srollel
(at Sruli's house. Srollel would include a fully equipped basement with a separate entrance and all the snacks the Rebbetzin can bake.)

Then, this Shabbos we had breaking new that the official Stollel Sponsor and Supporter, Rabbi Dr. Jerry Friedman

offered his house (located across the street from the original Stollel Headquarters) to house Stollel 5770. He and his family are going on a trip during the winter break, would be leaving for a week, and offered to leave the Stollel his keys.

The question has thus become:

The Srollel
v.s.
The Frollel

Placelessness...

Stollel 2010
is quickly approaching...

With Rabbeinu Yitzchak's having a supposed full two week break there is opportunity for a solid chunk of Stollel activity.

Different people have different schedules this year and as such one should not expect a repeat of last year. Not that it will be worse but it will be different. The main concern as of now is finding a location to house the Stollel.

Different ideas were mentioned in a post-Glueck ma'ariv hock feat. prison-break Raffi but nothing has been officially agreed upon.

Let's think together. Post below.

Main things to keep in mind
(though it could be that we will have to sacrifice some of those things which we had last year):

1) It's good to have a kitchen/room with couches on premises
2) It's good to be based somewhere where people can pop in an out if they can't commit to full days of Stollel activity
3) It's good if this place is not being occupied by anyone but the Stollel

Hoshana Rabbah Minyan

Note the New Start Time: 7 A.M.
East Hill Synagogue
Englewood N.J.

Spread the Word

The East Hill Synagogue has ordered 25 extra hoshanos for our gathering, so assume that you can get there.

It is an unfortunate trait of human nature that a person feels it is sufficient to have done only a part of what was required of him. However this is not enough. Hoshana Rabbah represents the culmination of a process that begins on Rosh Chodesh Elul and encompasses Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Succos. It is the process of teshuva. It is a time that is supposed to bring us nearer to Hashem. On Hoshana Rabbah, as this time draws to a close, we take hold of the aravos alone, with no smell and no taste, in order to emphasize that very often, it is those who are the furthest removed that have the greatest sensitivity to their faults and are prepared to try and rectify them. Stollel Update...

Some Stollel members ventured up to the Pocono's for a night and day. During the day Srulii and I ventured out to explore the local grounds.

It was cold and so we bundled up, figuring that we would return within the hour. We began by following a paved path around the giant lake, assuming that it would go full-circle and end up back at the house where we were based.

When the path suddenly ended...

we were faced with two options:

1) Turn around, go back, and take the road that we had already traveled
or
2) Go through the thick woods hoping to find a way out on the other side

Being the adventurers that we are we went forward, into the thicket.

Two hours later we were still in the woods.

Our food supply was running low and so was the food supply of local Pocono bears. We were forced to eat berries and mushrooms that we found along the way.

We went deeper into the woods, finally understanding what it means to be lost in the forest.

Making our way through the thicket and swimming through the wetlands, fighting off snakes, scorpions, and bears

we found our salvation in the clearing, still alive to tell the tale.

A message from the Leicht's...

Hello friends and family,

My little brother, Raffi Leicht is in treatment for Lymphoma at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Raffi will need blood and or platelet transfusions over the course of the next several months.

If you might be available to donate, please reply to:

isaac.leicht@gmail.com

with your name, phone number and email address so I can keep you on file as someone to contact should the need for blood or platelets arise.

You may also include your blood type, if you know it.

Raffi's blood type is A+. Anyone with A+, A-, O+ or O- is a match for Raffi, but all donations are sincerely appreciated. For platelet donations blood type does not need to match.

You may also donate blood to the general supply at any time at the MSKCC Blood Donor Program: Blood Donor Room, Schwartz Building Lobby, 1250 First Avenue, between 67th & 68th Streets, 212-639-8177, 212-639-7643, www.mskcc.org/blooddonations. When you donate, tell them Raphael Leicht sent you and this will ensure that your donation goes into Raffi's account. However, donors on our list would be designating blood or platelets for Raffi specifically and will be scheduled by the family as needed.

Thank you and feel free to call or reply with any questions,

Isaac "Zaki" Leicht

STOLLEL SELICHOS

There has been an expressed interest in a Stollel Selichos (Right now we're speaking about opening night selichos (i.e. the first motzei Shabbos)...more to come about possible post-opening-night selichos events). The Stokars have agreed to host and we anticipate it will be a full event, however, just to make sure please comment if you think you are interested in attending.

HaRav MTW said that he would love to speak before hand for those who are interested and selichos will be led by one of the pious members of the chevra who has experience in singing in a public forum. Essentially the line up looks like this...

Again, please comment if you're interested.

KITZUR SHULCHAN ARUCH CHAZARA

We had our first chazara session for the halachos we have been learning daily in the zechus of a refuah sheleimah for Raffi. It seems (depending on whether R' Zev Reichman continues his Likutei Moharan shiur) we will do it weekly on Thursdays at 12:30ish. It's a good opportunity to gather, learn bi'tzibbur, and talk about the current matzav and what more we can do to help.

Anybody who does not get the daily reminders of the hachlatos and would like to should get in touch with hachlatosforrafi@gmail.com.
